What is Robotic Surgery?

ROBOTIC SURGERY: AN OVERVIEW

Robotic Surgery consists of using a robotic surgical system to perform operations on patients. Similar to minimally invasive procedures, it is performed with smaller incisions, more precise movements. The surgeon sits at the console doing the operation.  The console provides 3D visualization on a computer screen and usually has arm-like appendages (joints) which are connected to the patient’s body through long thin instruments called endoscopes or laparoscopes.

The robot replicates the surgeon’s hand movements while minimizing hand tremors. The surgeon thus can operate with enhanced precision, dexterity, and in places with difficult access. The robot can be programmed to perform any type of function that a human could do, from the simple to the complex. This technique provides surgeons with greater accuracy and precision, reduced physiological trauma, and improved functional outcomes in comparison to traditional open surgery.

BENEFITS OF ROBOTIC SURGERY

Robotic surgery offers many benefits. The first is that it requires very small incisions. This means that the patient heals more quickly and with less pain than if they had undergone traditional surgery. The risk of infection is very low. The patient will have very minimal blood loss and scars are less visible when compared to traditional surgeries. Robotic surgery also offers higher precision and accuracy in the cutting of tissues and organs. This is because robotic arms are smaller than human hands. Other benefits include having a short hospital stay, removing the need for post-surgery care and making it easier to remove cancerous cells. This form of surgery is expected to be significantly less expensive than traditional surgery.

Undoubtedly, Robotic surgery is a broad field that holds many possibilities in the future. It is crucial to note that it is not suitable for all patients or situations. It is typically used when the tumour is contained in one area of the body. Robotic surgery also presents an opportunity to treat cancer without cutting into surrounding healthy tissue, which reduces side effects and recovery time. Kindly consult with your surgeon before making a decision about this type of procedure.
